A Historic Site to Visit in Ohio:

Rufus Putnam arrived at the mouth of the Muskingum River on April 7, 1788, and commenced to survey of the town of Marietta.
The Land Office is on the grounds of the Campus Martius Museum. Within the museum itself is the Rufus and Persis Putnam home, once part of the original Campus Martius fortification and dating to 1788 – 15 years before Ohio became a state. Tours of the home are available.

Research landing page photos Since 1927, the State Archives has been responsible for preserving and making available to the public government records of enduring historical value. In 1959, the responsibility for the State Archives was entrusted to the Ohio Historical Society. Fifty years later, Ohioans have many reasons to be proud of their State Archives and Library.

The 150th anniversary of the American Civil War is
upon us. The Civil War sesquicentennial (2011-2015) provides a fresh opportunity for a new generation to rediscover the many ways in which Ohioans played a key role in the war and in which the war – “this mighty scourge,” as Lincoln described it – changed life in Ohio. The Civil War story in Ohio touches almost every community in the state, and this website is a place for those interested in its vast and fascinating history to come together around the anniversary of that time period.
