Quilt D, H86311 Lois Ide created this pixel image of Abraham Lincoln using the paper-piecing method of basting a square of fabric over a paper template and then sewing the pieces together. The border of pieced squares created in the classic Log Cabin pattern is a perfect compliment to Lincoln’s origins.

On the back of the quilt, Ms. Ide provided this quote by Abraham Lincoln:

"You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves."

Quilter’s Corner
English piecing or paper piecing as a technique for working with very small sections of fabric has considerable history, but using computer technology to create the pattern is a late 20th-century innovation. This quilt contains 4,200 small squares, each measuring 5/8 inch on a side, placed in a pattern created by Joy Moss. The fabric for the image of Lincoln’s face were hand-dyed by Judie Wolfe. The Log Cabin squares have orange centers surrounded by plain browns and tans and blue prints.
