Quilt C, H86243 World Peace is unarguably Lois Ide’s best-known quilt. UNICEF reproduced an image of the quilt for its greeting card in 1993, and through that medium, it has been appreciated by untold numbers of people. The words Peace, World Peace, Peace on Earth, May Peace Prevail on Earth, and There Will Be World Peace are embroidered in thirty-eight languages around the outermost border.

The earth’s continents are depicted in their true shape and relative size. The quilt piecework is based on a traditional quilt pattern, Around the World.

Quilter’s Corner
Ms. Ide used eight shades of blue in two-inch blocks radiating from an orange center, also made of two-inch blocks. She represented the earth through an appliqué of a homolographic projection with embroidered outlines, and a dove with an olive branch descending to the earth through a stuffed appliqué. The quilt has three borders – orange, light blue, and navy blue – of varying widths. She bound the quilt by turning the front’s navy border fabric to the back. The back fabric is a tiny print of black, gray, and white dots on a blue background. Ms. Ide’s quilting stitches radiate from the earth to the first borders, and the thread matches the blocks.
