4. DETERMINING FEES

The Ohio Historical Society charges fees for the purchase of an image and the rights to use the image for a particular purpose (use fee). These funds cover the Society’s costs for providing photoduplication services, as well as the long-term care of the original historical materials.

Digital images downloaded from OhioPix are $25, plus applicable use fees. See http://www.ohiohistory.org/resource/audiovis/photodup.html for information on pricing for prints, shipping and use fees.

Use Fees are broken into four categories:

  1. Personal Research Use Only. Materials for personal use may be used for reference or research purposes or private display only. If you plan to use the image(s) for publication, exhibition, or other public use, select a different use category. (Private display includes in-home display or in private (non-public) areas of offices or businesses).
  2. Academic/Non-Profit Use: Academic users who are affiliated with a university press and are publishing scholarly works. Non-profit users have 501(c)3 status and are using an image for non-commercial purposes. Ohio tax-exempt users must be verified before purchasing online. Museums, historical societies, libraries and philanthropic organizations are examples of non-profit users.
  3. Commercial Use. Commercial users will not have 501(c)3 status and will have a distribution of more than 1,000 copies. Commercial users are using images for projects such as the publication of textbooks, for-profit books, articles, DVDs, advertising or exhibition.

Will I be charged tax on images?

Ohio residents are charged 6.75% tax on digital files. Use fees are not taxable.

5. FINDING IMAGES IN OHIOPIX

How do I find images in the OhioPix image database?

There are two methods of finding items in the OhioPix database:

  1. Browsing by Topic
By using the "Sample images by topic" on the lefthand menu bar, you can view a selection of images in the database that fit into those categories.

  2. Search
At any time you can use the Search blank at the top to perform a "Google" style search of the image database. Your keywords will be searched in the title, description and other fields of the records. You can put quotes around a phrase to keep the keywords together, for example: "battle of fallen timbers".
6. OTHER IMAGES IN THE OHIO HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S COLLECTIONS

While OhioPix continues to add images regularly, the site represents only a portion of the Society’s collections. Researchers are encouraged to utilize other tools in addition to OhioPix, including:

  • African American Experience in Ohio, 1850-1920
The African American Experience was created in partnership with the Library of Congress and the Ameritech Foundation. The site includes numerous photographs, manuscripts, and newspapers documenting the lives of African Americans during this time period.
  • Ohio Memory
Ohio Memory is a collaborative digital library that includes more than 26,000 images from the Ohio Historical Society and 330 other historical societies, libraries and museums around the state.

In addition, Society staff are available to assist with finding specific images. For more information and pricing for research and photocopy requests, see: http://www.ohiohistory.org/resource/archlib/fees/index.html
