Description:
Photographic postcard of Alice Roosevelt Longworth at the ceremony dedicating the memorial to United States President and former Ohio Governor William McKinley on the grounds of the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, Ohio September 14, 1906. She was the eldest daughter of Theodore Roosevelt who served as William McKinley's Vice President. Roosevelt became President in 1901 after McKinley was assassinated. In 1906 she married Ohio Representative Nicholas Longworth.

Title:
Attack on Fort Meigs

Description:
Print with the caption "The attack on Fort Meigs, May 5, 1813" published in the "Hard Cider and Log Cabin Almanac," 1841. Fort Meigs was built on the Maumee River during the War of 1812 under the orders of General William Henry Harrison. It was intended to serve as a staging area and supply depot to support the invasion of Canada. The U.S. Army successfully defended the fort from multiple attacks by the British Army and their Native American allies. Fort Meigs no longer exists, however a reconstructed fort now exists on the site of the original. The Ohio Historical Society operates the site.

Baseball Game

Description:
This broadside announces a baseball game between the Hillsboro and Cincinnati teams, circa 1900. The game of baseball began in New York City in the 1840s and 1850s. During the Civil War, Union soldiers introduced the game to other soldiers from remote regions of the country. When the war ended, baseball clubs spread across the United States. The National League of Professional Baseball formed in 1876 to formalize professional baseball, but amateur baseball remained popular. By the end of the nineteenth century, many small towns in Ohio had formed their own baseball teams.
