John Rankin and his wife, Jane Rankin. Mrs. John Rankin is identified as Jane in U.S. Census records and the Rankin's Tennessee state marriage record. Later sources have recorded her name as Jean. The portrait was taken for their 50th wedding anniversary, ca. 1866. The Rankin home near Ripley, Ohio, was built in 1828 and sits on a hill overlooking the Ohio River. It served as an important stop on the Underground Railroad. The Rankins worked with their neighbors to assist thousands of slaves to escape to freedom. Width: 2043 pixels Height: 2911 pixels
