Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was assassinated on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo, Serbia. Within months, the European continent descended into a full-scale war. The United States entered the fight on April 6, 1917 by declaring war on Germany.

Approximately 26,000 Ohio National Guardsmen and 200,000 other Ohioans fought for the United States during World War I. The majority of the guardsmen were mustered into the service at Camp Sherman near Chillicothe, Ohio or Camp Sheridan near Birmingham, Alabama. The remaining Ohio servicemen mustered in at military installations across the country.
