Exploring Ohio's Amazing Ancient Earthworks
Ohio History Center - Columbus
2 p.m.: Ohio's remarkable mounds and earthen enclosures were built by a number of ancient American Indian cultures over many centuries and for a variety of purposes. Join Curator of Archaeology Brad Lepper in the Ohio History Center's Discovery Theatre for an informal discussion of the latest theories concerning the origins of Ohio's remarkable mounds and earthen enclosures (Why are many earthworks so enormous? Why are many aligned to the rising and setting of the sun and moon?), myths and misconceptions surrounding them (Is there evidence for pre-Columbian European influence on the rise of the mound-building cultures? Were the earthworks centers for a vast network of trade and commerce?), and the status of efforts to nominate eight of Ohio's earthworks, including three Ohio Historical Society sites, to the UNESCO World Heritage List. After the program, tour the new exhibit "Following in Ancient Footsteps" with Lepper, where you can see some of most spectacular works of art ever produced by Ohio's mound-building cultures.
