CULTURE IN AMERICA


Nowhere was the line between slave states and free states as clearly defined as it was in
Ohio. Slaves knew that crossing the Ohio River put them closer to freedom - so did the
bounty hunters who were hired to stop them. It's not a surprise that the location chosen
for the National Afro-American Museum & Cultural Center was Wilberforce,
Ohio, because the state played a major role in the Underground Railroad and the town
of Wilberforce was settled by abolitionists who helped thousands of slaves escape
