Regional Meetings Bring Local Historians Together

Christie Raber of Bowling Green looks forward to the Ohio Association of Historical Societies & Museums (OAHSM) Regional Meetings.

"I always enjoy the regional meetings because they bring together so many area people who are active in historical societies, museums and related organizations," said Raber, who is executive director of the Wood County Historical Center and Museum and also serves as second vice president of OAHSM.

Held every spring in each of 10 regions of the state, the meetings bring together those who volunteer or work for area historical societies, museums, and related organizations to share their experiences and exchange ideas. Within each region, the meeting is hosted by a different group each year, offering an opportunity to see what organizations in other communities are doing.

Each meeting features three skill-building sessions plus updates from the Ohio Association of Historical Societies & Museums and the Ohio Historical Society's Local History Office, an opportunity to share what your organization is doing, and a chance to tour a history museum or historic place in the host community.

This year, meetings will be held in Xenia, March 7, hosted by Greene County Historical Society; Whitehall, March 14, hosted by Whitehall Historical Society; Kenton, March 21, hosted by Hardin County Historical Museums; Waynesville, March 28, hosted by the Museum at the Friends Home; Wooster, April 4, hosted by Wayne County Historical Society; Athens, April 18, hosted by Athens County Historical Society; Marietta, April 25, hosted by The Castle; Peninsula, April 25, hosted by Peninsula Library & Historical Society; North Fairfield, May 2, hosted by North Fairfield Historical Association; and Warren, May 2, hosted by the Sutliff Museum, Trumbull County Historical Society and Upton Association.

All of the meetings are on Saturdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

This year's theme is The Role of Historical Organizations in Shaping and Engaging Communities.

Registration, including lunch, is just $25 per meeting for OAHSM members (non-members $32). Advance registration is required by the Monday before your meeting. (For the April 4 Wooster meeting, please register by March 23, two Mondays in advance).

For full details of each meeting and to register, click here or call toll free 800.858.6878 Monday through Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. (except March 28 through April 5).

The regional meetings are organized for the Ohio Association of Historical Societies & Museums by the Ohio Historical Society's Local History Office.

The Ohio Association of Historical Societies & Museums, organized in 1960 under sponsorship of the Ohio Historical Society, is composed of local historical societies, historic preservation groups, history museums, archives, libraries, and genealogical societies throughout the state involved in collecting, preserving, and interpreting Ohio's history.
