Genealogy Workshop: The Cornerstones of Genealogy

This course establishes the foundation for all further genealogical research. It provides the beginning genealogist or family historian with the scope, understanding and sources of information used to prepare a family tree or family history. It describes the uses and sources of vital statistics, census records, land records and probate files. The course includes topics such as military records, church records, identifying female ancestors, importance of source documentation, newspapers, family portraits, obscure sources and record preservation and summarizes special types of records available to add body to basic information. Echoes in Time Theatre Presents 'Within the Realm of Reason, as told by Ambrose Bierce'

Bierce was an Ohio-born American newspaper columnist, satirist, essayist, short-story writer, and novelist-an enigmatic figure, who disappeared in the Mexican Revolution. His fate is still a mystery. Bierce is best known for his numerous short stories collected in Tales of Soldiers and Civilians (1891), which show the influence of Edgar Allan Poe. As a literary critic, he was against realism. After Stephen Crane published his famous novel about the Civil War, The Red Badge of Courage, Bierce wrote, "I had thought there could be only two worse writers than Stephen Crane, namely, two Stephen Cranes." Come listen to the Poe-like short stories written and told by Bierce, portrayed by Mike Follin of Chesterville, Ohio. Fort Recovery Archaeological Festival for Families

This family-friendly event will acquaint young and old about Ohio archaeology. Flintknappers will demonstrate how spear points and arrowheads were made from flint. Visitors will get pointers from archaeologists as they dig for artifacts and identify finds. There with be guest presenters on all things archaeology plus family activities, including face painting, during the day. The event is sponsored by The Blue Jacket Chapter of the Archaeological Society of Ohio and the Fort Recovery State Museum as part of statewide events for Ohio Archaeology Month. Author Presentation: 'The Harding Affair: Love and Espionage During the Great War' by James D. Robenalt

Author James D. Robenalt provides a look at over 800 pages of love letters that Warren Harding wrote to Carrie Phillips of Marion, Ohio, in his newly published book, "The Harding Affair: Love and Espionage During the Great War." Robenalt's work relays a detailed, historical account that places the Harding/Phillips love affair in the context of World War I. Was Carrie Phillips a spy for the Germans who had access to then Senator Harding as he voted to declare war on Germany? Robenalt not only uncovers the spy story, but illuminates the reasons the U.S. entered Great War and why it played such a troublesome role in the peace conference that followed. Following the presentation, the author will sign books, which are available for purchase in the Ohio History Store. Pilgrimage and Presidential Wreath Laying at the Harding Memorial

Commemorate the birth of President Harding with the annual Scout Pilgrimage to the Harding tomb. More than 500 scouts gather each year to pay homage to the President and First Lady for their support of scouting. This event also includes the U.S. Army's annual wreath-laying ceremony on behalf of the White House. Woodland Indian Harvest Festival
Serpent Mound, PEEBLES

Spend the afternoon learning how Native Americans prepared for winter in Ohio. Staff and volunteers will provide demonstrations on spinning natural fibers, flint knapping, wood carving, working with gourds and medicinal herbs. At the site's model Woodland Indian homestead, volunteers will explain what is known about how prehistoric Native Americans lived. Learn about hunting and how it provided an important food source. Atlatl demonstrations will be given and visitors can try using this primitive hunting weapon under the watchful eye of experts. Prehistoric tools and other actual Native American artifacts will be on display by amateur archaeologists from the Archaeological Society of Ohio. Visitors can also bring their own flint points and artifacts to be identified by an archaeologist from the Ohio Historical Society. Foods and crafts will be available for purchase. Parking: $7/car. Fall Earthworks Tour

Walk through a 2,000-year-old Hopewell enclosure and learn about the rich prehistoric past of Warren County. Take a leisurely stroll on a paved walkway through a wooded area and learn more about this World Heritage List nominated site. Site manager, Jack Blosser shares how the 18,000 feet of earthen walls were built and used by the Native Americans. An added highlight is the bright fall colors that dot the landscape. Film archivists and historians have long appreciated home movies as examples of amateur filmmaking and as a rich historic record of everyday life. However, many of the home movies made in the 20th century are stored in shoeboxes in the bottom of closets. The cameras and film needed to shoot them are no longer available and the projectors that we once had to play them are broken or missing, but the movies themselves remain with us. Bring your 8-mm and 16-mm films to be inspected by an archivist and played on working movie projector. Or, just come and enjoy the show. Genealogy Workshop: A Trip Through Time with the Census
