Glorious Fourth: Independence Day Celebration

Drums Along the Maumee

Fife and drum corps from across the country gather at Fort Meigs to play military music from the 1750s through the war of 1812. The musicians perform with authentic wooden fifes and rope tension drums. The music starts at 10 a.m. both days and the corps perform as a massed band at 4 p.m. each afternoon. The corps change each year. In addition to the music, War of 1812 soldiers and civilians provide demonstrations of weapons, camp life and provide hands-on activities for the kids. Learn about the history of Fort Ancient through by touring the Moorehead Circle, where an ongoing archaeological investigation is being led by Wright State University. Discussions of the archaeological history and prehistoric construction of Fort Ancient take place during 30-minute outdoor programs. Visitors can walk through the 9,000-square-foot museum and visit a reconstructed prehistoric garden with crops that were grown more than a thousand years ago.
