2008 Ohio Historic Preservation Office Awards Deadline

Nominations are being accepted through June 1, 2008, for the Ohio Historic Preservation Office Awards, which recognize outstanding achievements in preservation, rehabilitation, and adaptive use of historic properties, as well as publications and educational programs that promote preservation of historic places in Ohio. The awards are presented in two categories: Preservation Merit, and Public Education and Awareness. Activities eligible for the Preservation Merit Award include longtime care of a historic property - preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, or adaptive use of an important building or site - and leadership, support, or service to historic preservation. The Public Education and Awareness Award is for advocacy, educational programs, publications, film and video, special events, and similar efforts which have helped to increase understanding and awareness of historic preservation at the local, regional, or state level. Summer Weekend Series: Flint, Iron and Wood

Flint knapper Chris Stricklett demonstrates the ancient skill of shaping flint into tools and wood turner Floyd Anstaett demonstrates the fine art of turning bowls from hardwood. The importance of ironwork as a world-changing skill will be explored by blacksmith Robert Hulett while Spencer Northup provides examples of frontier long rifles as modern day reproductions that he will fire as part of the demonstration. Blast from the Past

The Ohio Historical Society announces a new summer program that provides kids with the ultimate summer adventure - a trip back in time! Blast from the Past at the Ohio Historical Center gives kids and their parents a choice among more than a dozen programs, each focusing on a different aspect of life in Ohio's past. Cooking, music, theater, sports, and Civil War reenacting are just a few of this year's offerings. Campers, or "Time Travelers," will bring their own nonperishable lunches each day and have the option to wear period-style clothing. Simple dresses with aprons and house caps for girls and shirts, kerchiefs and hats for boys will be available for purchase, or they may choose to make their own using supplied patterns. Sessions are for kids age 8 and older. The cost is $180 per week for nonmembers and $150 per week for members. Extended care options are available for an additional fee. Beyond the Fences of Zoar Garden Tour and Luncheon
