2008 Ohio Association of Historical Societies & Museums Awards Deadline

Is there an outstanding local history project or a person who’s made a big contribution to the field of local history in your community? Now’s the time to honor them with an award! The Ohio Association of Historical Societies & Museums recognizes excellent projects, programs, and publications produced by Ohio’s historical organizations and those who make them happen, with awards in two categories: History Outreach Awards recognize outstanding projects, including public programs, exhibits, and media and publications, that have educational content, have contributed to promotion and understanding of local and state history, and have had an impact on the community. History Outreach Awards are presented in two categories: Excellence Awards, given to projects judged to be excellent compared with similar ones. At least one Excellence Award is given to an organization with a budget above $25,000 and one to an organization with a budget below $25,000. Commendation Awards, given to projects that have demonstrated ability in relationship to available means and standards. Individual Achievement Awards recognize people who have made outstanding contributions to Ohio’s historical societies or history museums or to understanding and appreciation of state or local history. Nominations are due July 1, 2008. A group of reviewers from OAHSM member organizations will evaluate the nominations, and recipients will be announced by the end of August. The awards will be presented on Saturday, Oct. 4, at a luncheon at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus. The awards have been presented annually since 1959. Mr. Lincoln's Camera Man: An Evening With Matthew Brady
Ohio Historical Center, COLUMBUS
30-minute solo performances at 7 and 8 p.m.

Matthew Brady was one of the foremost early American photographers and one of the earliest war photographers. As "official photographer" for the Union Army in the Civil War, he was Mr. Lincoln's Camera Man. He accompanied the troops and recorded the war firsthand. This evening Mr. Brady will talk about and show using a Magic Lantern and glass plates, his work on the battlefield and in his studio. Mark Holbrook of Columbus portrays Matthew Brady. FREE with regular museum admission.

Independence Day Concert

Glorious Fourth: Independence Day Celebration

1813 Independence Celebration

In 1813, the Fourth of July at Fort Meigs was celebrated with cannon firings, toasts, muskets and a day of leisure. War of 1812 soldiers and civilians will create an encampment throughout the weekend. See musket demonstrations, watch cannon firings and try your hand at period games and activities. New hands-on activities this year including butter churning and an early form of baseball called rounders. Blast from the Past

The Ohio Historical Society announces a new summer program that provides kids with the ultimate summer adventure - a trip back in time! Blast from the Past at the Ohio Historical Center gives kids and their parents a choice among more than a dozen programs, each focusing on a different aspect of life in Ohio's past. Cooking, music, theater, sports, and Civil War reenacting are just a few of this year's offerings. Campers, or "Time Travelers," will bring their own nonperishable lunches each day and have the option to wear period-style clothing. Simple dresses with aprons and house caps for girls and shirts, kerchiefs and hats for boys will be available for purchase, or they may choose to make their own using supplied patterns. Sessions are for kids age 8 and older. The cost is $180 per week for nonmembers and $150 per week for members. Extended care options are available for an additional fee. Ohio Atlatl Association Practice and Competition

Experience the fun of throwing a long dart with a tool that dates back thousands of years called an atlatl. On Saturday at 2 p.m., Skeeter Kish will explore the atlatl, including its construction, physics and history. From noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, flintknapper Chris Miller will demonstrate the fine and ancient art of fashioning projectile points from flint. Ohio Archaeological Inventory: I-Form Basic Data Entry Training

This workshop will help you with the basics of using I-Form to record information about historic properties, upload digital photographs and maps, and save your work. Native American Pottery Workshop

Drums Along the Maumee

See and hear fife and drum corps from across the country play military music from the 1750s through the War of 1812. The musicians perform with authentic wooden fifes and rope tensions drums. The music starts at 10 a.m. both days and the corps will perform as a massed band at 4 p.m. each afternoon. War of 1812 soldiers and civilians will provide demonstrations of weapons, camp life and provide hands-on activities for the kids. Period dancing from early America returns this year. The public is encouraged to participate. No experience, costuming or partner is required. Our experienced callers will guide you through the dances. Just bring your interest and enthusiasm.
