Genealogy Workshop: Newspaper Research for Genealogists (GW14)

Newspapers contain vast amounts of family history information beyond obituaries yet are often overlooked as a resource. This class will cover birth, death and marriage announcements as well as legal notices, estate, land and tax information and community “gossip” columns. All classes will be held in the Archives/Library at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus. Experience the hobbies and interests of Zane Grey, the Zanesville author who wrote more than 80 books on the American West. Oh Dams!: The Story of the Muskingum River Locks and Dams

Please join us for our exclusive members-only preview and reception for Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs. This exhibit features 150 photographs, including the Pulitzer winners from 1942 to 2007. Cyma Rubin, curator of the exhibit and editor of the book, Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs, will welcome guests to the event and speak about the exhibit's history. A book signing will follow. Rubin also produced the video, Moment of Impact, which chronicles the journeys of selected Pulitzer photographers. This video will be playing throughout the reception in Gallery 3 and the Orientation Area. War on the Homefront, 1000 AD vs. 1813

How have people's roles in conflict changed over time and between cultures? Learn about these differences by touring an authentic Viking encampment and a War of 1812 camp. Compare and contrast how two cultures prepared and sustained war efforts.

Join Viking reenactors from the U.S., Canada, England and Scotland as they re-create an authentic Viking encampment. See a 27-foot-long Viking raiding boat, watch weapons battles, see spinning, weaving and metal working. Listen to Viking stories and watch pewter casting. Kids can use Viking shields and learn how to use a Viking battle tactic called a shield wall.

Tour a War of 1812 encampment to learn about the war effort during the War of 1812. See musket and artillery demonstrations. Try your hand at period activities and see a period bake oven in action. Heirloom Plant Sale

Adena's annual heirloom plant sale features heirloom plants grown in Adena's greenhouses, including 30 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, heirloom vegetables and herbs, 100 heirloom and rare flowers, and unique hanging baskets. Adena staff and Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and relate the history of the plants. Gardening books and tools available in Adena's Ohio History Store. Spend the day and tour the entire site - Thomas Worthington's 1807 mansion, outbuildings, grounds and Museum and Education Center (site tours not available on Monday or Tuesday). The Repose of President Lincoln

On April 29, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln lay-in-state in the Ohio Statehouse Rotunda during a 29-day journey back across the nation to be buried in Springfield, Illinois. More than 50,000 Ohioans in a period of six hours filed by the martyred President's coffin to pay their respects. SEVC will mark the occasion in an appropriate Victorian manner by placing a wreath on the Lincoln and Vicksburg Victory Monument in mourning. For more information, call 614.728.2696.
