Lead Volunteer Coordinator

Summary:
Develops and enhances the volunteer program. Responsibilities include recruitment, training and administration of volunteers for special programs/events, as well as daily operations. In addition, this position will coordinate all un-paid internships and Federal Work Study (FWS) programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with OHS managers to develop and implement recruitment programs aimed at finding suitable persons desiring to volunteer their time to the Ohio Historical Society. Trains staff in methods of using volunteers, and fosters teamwork between both parties.
  • Works with area colleges and universities (placement offices, professors, etc) to actively recruit candidates for internships, FWS and volunteers for pre-determined openings.
  • Coordinates placement of volunteers, assists in the creation of job descriptions, ensures appropriate paperwork and records are in place.
  • Maintains open communication with all volunteers keeping them abreast of events, changes, and opportunities within OHS.
  • Conducts orientation and training programs for volunteers.
  • Researches, develops and administers volunteer recognition programs.
  • Fosters productive volunteer relations within OHS and community resources within the state of Ohio.
  • Manages Volunteer database.
  • Coordinates HR programs/activities such as employee recognition activities, Health and Wellness events, and brown bag lunches. Plans, arranges and hosts sessions in conjuncton with speaker(s).
  • Maintains and oversees the Applicant Flow/Application process.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervision of volunteers and interns.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience:
Associates degree in Business Administration or Human Resources or equivalent work experience. Knowledge of grants and creating and managing special events. Plus, three years experience in working with volunteers, and creating a volunteer management process. Experience in screening, interviewing and developing people. Above average ability to work with, advise, persuade, and motivate a variety of people.

Language Skills:
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Mathematical Skills:
Requires basic mathematical skills.

Technical Skills:
Experience with volunteer recruitment tools and media. Proficiency in Microsoft office products (Word, Excel) mail merge, and e-mail lists.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to carry out the responsibilities of the position with minimal supervision. Ability to multi-task and take initiative.

Physical Demands:
Requires prolonged sitting, frequent standing, bending, stooping and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires normal range of hearing and manual dexterity sufficient to operate keyboard, telephone, photocopiers, calculator and other office equipment as needed. Requires ability to work under stressful conditions and to work irregular hours.

Work Environment:
Normal office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work.
